SONG FOR AMERICA

an ode to American freedom and the light and hope it brings to a weary world.

  • SONG FOR AMERICA - LYRICS

    Verse 1:

These are dark and dangerous times when fear rules hearts and minds

Nations look to us and wonder where the light has gone

    Verse 2:

America has always stood for decency and common good

But if common sense has failed, will intelligence and love prevail?

    Refrain 1:

Was it you, America, first declared democracy?

Was it you, America, raised the flag of liberty?

Led by light and law, fed by truth and grace

Have you always led the way?

    Verse 3:

Tyrants tremble at the sound that rings around the world

Freedom is for all and mercy is for every soul

    Verse 4:

The tired and huddled masses yearning to be free

Across the shining sea, the dream of Lady Liberty

    Refrain 2:

Is it you, America, who proclaim democracy?

Is it you, America, who pursue equality?

Led by light and law, fed by truth and grace

Have you tried to lead the way?

    bridge:

A way that brings together the well-off and the poor

Caught up in compassion opportunity the cure

    Verse 5:

Who will stand with courage born of freedom fought so dear

to make the dark clouds pass and not cower behind walls of fear?

    Refrain 3:

Is it you, America, shines the light of democracy?

Is it you, America, reaps the harvest of diversity?

Led by light and law, fed by truth and grace

Can you show the world the way?

Can you lead us all today?

    Refrain 4:

Oh is it you, America, still declare democracy?

Oh is it you, America, still raise the flag of liberty?

Led by light and law, fed by truth and grace

Will you show the world the way?

Will you lead us all today?

SONG FOR AMERICA -

FIRST LIVE PERFORMANCE!

Paul Gerard : "Song for America"

August 18, 2017

'Song for America' (new working title)

Last night's inaugural live performance at C & P Coffee was well-received!

The song has been retitled from 'Only You America' to 'Song for America'.

Lyrics have been reworked for inclusiveness and clarity, especially given the racist tumult of the last few days.

Let me know what you think! Paul Gerard email.

We're now strategizing how to best get this recorded and circulated fast—to help inspire all Americans in these "dark and dangerous times."

THE INSPIRATION

July 4, 2017

While we as a country are far from perfect, we have been that beacon of hope, that light of freedom for the desperate souls and nations of the world.

And now, its going to be "America First." It is this selfish message that inspired me to write "Only You, America," an ode to American freedom and the light and hope it brings to a weary world.

As the 'majority' of Americans, I was stunned on election night last November, faced with the reality that the worst had happened, DJT would be the next president. How could this happen? Well, we're learning more every day exactly how it happened. I was further stunned and dismayed during the inauguration in January, when the post-coup 'coronation' took place (before fewer actual persons than claimed). However, I was heartened by the Women's March in Seattle, where hundreds of thousands gathered to begin the movement to shore up the bulwarks of our democracy against the heretofore inconceivable threats against many of our rights, not to mention our common decency.

The negative rhetoric ringing from the new administration was "America First," meaning the rest of you nations and peoples can fend for yourself. We're keeping our relative riches and perks to ourselves. Don't come knocking on our door. Don't look to us for moral support of inspiration. Don't seek deliverance at our door. The 'No Trespassing' signs were up on every entrance to the country.

And all this after growing up in a country where our parents, "the greatest generation", had fought and died for freedom—to preserve freedom and democracy as a possibility around the world, for nations to aspire to. Many others had fought in the Cold War battles in Korea and Vietnam. We have led the world during the American Century, led the way through two world wars.

This is all I can offer. It is something positive—a call to remember who we are, who we have been and who we must be, for the good of the world.
